Chiropractor for Neck Muscle Pain

Chiropractor for Neck Muscle Pain

chiropractor for neck muscle pain

Looking for a chiropractor for neck muscle pain? Neck pain is a very common problem, but how do you know if the pain is actually from the muscles or some other area?

Structures in the neck that can cause pain

  • Muscles
  • Joints (includes joint itself and ligaments)
  • Nerves

Cause of painful neck muscles

  • Postural stress from computer, telephone, gaming, etc
  • Injuries such as car accidents, sports injuries, household strains
  • Poor pillow selection

How to tell if your pain is neck muscle pain

  1. A muscle will be painful when it is stretched. So if you have neck pain on the right, you want to stretch the right side muscles and see if this causes pain. Simply bend your neck towards the left. If this causes localized right sided neck pain it is likely that your pain is from muscles.
  2. The next step is to make sure there is no pain from the joint or ligaments. Bend your neck towards the right as far as you can. If this also causes right sided neck pain, then your pain may be coming from the muscles and/or joints.
  3. A final step to decide is to place your right hand on the right side of your head. Firmly resist with your hand as you try to push your head to the right into your hand. If this causes right sided neck pain then the pain you have is from the muscles. If this pushing does not cause neck pain then it is most likely a joint that is your source of neck pain.

Your chiropractor for neck muscle pain will do these tests to diagnose your problem.

Chiropractic treatment for neck muscle pain

Muscles contract and tighten when injured or irritated. That is why stretching them causes pain. Once they tighten up they do not want to loosen up. They must be forced to stretch back out to their original length.

Your chiropractor will use therapy modalities to try to relax the muscles such as heat, electrical stimulation and possibly cold laser.

Also effective is to manually massage and stretch the muscles. The doctor might also do a series of active isometric stretching exercises with you to loosen you up.

And of course most importantly, your doctor of chiropractic will perform chiropractic spinal adjustments (manipulation). Adjustments stretch the muscles and moves the joints through maximum normal motion. This triggers nerves to send signals to the brain to tell the brain to allow the muscles to relax.

If you have neck muscle pain, you should consider seeing a good chiropractor who will test to make sure your problem is in fact from the muscles and then apply the treatment that is very successful at relaxing muscles and taking away your pain. In Orange County, call Dr Barry Marks, DC at (714) 938-0575 for a neck pain evaluation and pain relieving treatment.

Chiropractor for Upper Back Pain

Seeking a Chiropractor for Upper Back Pain?

chiropractor for upper back pain

Chiropractic treatment is a good choice for upper back pain.

The upper back known as the “thoracic” area of the spine, is strategically placed on top of the lower back or lumbar spine and pelvis and supports the neck or cervical spine. The thoracic spine has a key function of creating a space, the thorax that holds your lungs and heart.

upper back pain treatmentAbout the Thoracic Spine

The thoracic spine has 12 spinal bones or vertebrae that are linked together by intervertebral discs and interlocking facet joints. Special bones called ribs attach at the rear of the thoracic spine and wrap around to unite as cartilage in front of the chest at your breastbone or sternum. Because the rib cage is attached to this area of the spine, mobility is less here than in the neck or low back. The shape of the thoracic spine is an outward curve called a ‘kyphosis.”

Problems That Cause Upper Back Pain

Because of where the thoracic region is situated, it is prone to problems caused by postural strain. Sitting at a computer with head bent forward or down stresses the upper part of the thoracic area. Sitting with torso turned slightly to type for long periods strains the upper and middle back. Standing with a slumped posture puts stress on the back creating discomfort. A common postural problem with females are heavy breasts. Larger breasted women have increased stress on the upper and middle back causing pain.

Accidents and injuries are common in the thoracic spine region. Because it is a relatively stiff part of the spine, if a sudden jarring or twisting occurs, the muscles and joints can be injured. An unexpected cause of thoracic injury that can cause middle or upper back pain is coughing. Prolonged coughing from the flu or asthma causes incredible peaks of energy to be transmitted into the muscles and joints causing strain.

A problem common in the upper back is scoliosis. An abnormal sideways curve of the spine is most common in this area and affects many people, women more than men. It can be caused by a misshaped vertebrae or due to a leg length inequality that causes the spine to adapt and grow sideways. In many, it is “idiopathic” meaning there is no known cause.

Upper Back Pain Symptoms

  • Aching, burning pain in upper or middle back
  • Pain behind the shoulder blade
  • Spasms or tingling sensation
  • Pain on breathing either in back or chest
  • Pain in chest or ribs
  • Chronic hiccups or heartburn
  • Upper back pain on head movement

Why Chiropractic for Upper Back Pain?

Doctors of Chiropractic specialize in examining the spine, understanding it’s function and restoring function when it has been lost. No other type of doctor is as well versed at finding malfunction in the bones and ribs of the spine as a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment locates the root cause of the problem, often a misalignment and corrects it through manual chiropractic adjustments and other therapies to relieve inflammation, spasm and pain. Exercises are often given as well as postural and work-space advice to prevent continued strain.

Chiropractic Upper Back Pain Relief Treatment

After the cause of your pain is found through physical examination and possibly x-rays, a treatment plan will be designed for your specific problem. Treatments can range from a few visits to a few months depending on the cause of your pain, how long its been there, what your lifestyle is like and the severity. The most common treatments include:

painless chiropractic adjustmentChiropractic spinal adjustments or manipulation

These are precise movements to unlock stuck joints and restore movement. There are many ways to adjust a spine and your chiropractor will decide on a method that is best for your spine type. You may be lying face down and pressure applied to your back or your doctor may lower you onto a block or hand as you lie back face up. No matter the procedure it is usually not painful and is done in seconds. Most likely you will hear a pop, crack or click as gas is released from the joint as it moves similar to opening a soda bottle. You may be adjusted in just one area, or your doctor may feel it is necessary to adjust multiple areas. Your ribs, sternum or collar bones may also be adjusted if needed.

Physiotherapy Modalities for Upper Back Pain

In addition to spinal adjustments, your chiropractor may also provide therapies that help you relax, calm down muscle spasms and relieve inflammation from the joints. Treatments such as moist heat, electrical stimulation, Cold laser and muscle tissue work can all be very effective at speeding the recovery process.

Exercises are Important for Upper Back Pain Relief

In general the average person has poor forward rounded shoulders that stresses the back. For this, your doctor will want to prescribe exercises that strengthen your upper and middle back to relive pressure. Chest stretches will also be helpful to release tension to allow the back muscles to pull your spine back and correct your posture.

Ergonomics and Upper Back Pain

We spend a long time at our desks at school or work. We may also spend many hours leaning forward working on things or we may spend numerous hours driving a car or truck. All of these activities can stress the spine so each must be assessed for proper body positioning known as Ergonomics—making objects in our environment work better with us. Items like chair selection and adjustment, desk and computer height, seat positioning in vehicles, etc are important to minimize postural strain.

Chiropractic for Upper Back Pain can help relieve your painful condition and get you back to enjoying your life. It can also prevent your condition from deteriorating and causing more and more pain robbing you of your health and productivity.

Your First Step in Getting Quick and Affordable Chiropractic Upper Back Pain Relief is Calling (714) 938-0575 for an Appointment for an Upper Back Pain Evaluation. The sooner you call the sooner you will be pain-free.

Neck pain? Neck stiffness? Consider seeing a chiropractor for neck pain, here’s why.

Where does neck pain come from?

  • Most neck pain or stiffness comes from tight sore muscles and malfunctions within the moveable spinal joints, known as facet joints.
  • The spacers and shock absorbers separating each spinal bone, called discs, may also cause pain if they are injured or becoming arthritic.
  • Nerves in the neck can become irritated causing not only neck pain, but also pain that travels down an arm or into the hand.

What causes pain and stiffness in the neck?

  • Chronic poor posture from working at a computer, staring down at hand held devices, or sitting watching TV can cause pain.
  • Neck pain from car accidents is a common source of a painful stiff neck, as are sports injuries, and slips and falls.
  • Degenerative changes, arthritis, due to aging or from past traumas commonly causes neck pain for people above the age of 40, but can afflict even people in their 20’s due to previous injuries as a child or teen.

How does a chiropractor know what’s causing my neck pain?

Chiropractors have very specialized training in how your spine works. A good chiropractic doctor will ask you about past injuries and your current onset of symptoms. He or she will then perform a routine examination of your neck, the same as an orthopedist and a neurologist checking fro joint motion, muscle tension, tenderness, reflexes, muscle strength, etc. Additionally, your chiropractor will do a chiropractic spinal analysis to locate areas within the spine that are malfunctioning. This is unique to chiropractors and there are many different methods, but the result is the same: pin-point the root mechanical cause of your neck pain. Most chiropractors will want to take or send you out for x-rays. This is to rule out major problems like fracture, dislocation, tumor, etc but also to observe your spinal alignment and mechanics. Alterations in the alignment of your spine cause malfunction and pain and are often overlooked by medical physicians who lack training in biomechanical x-ray analysis.

How will my chiropractor treat neck pain?

Your care will depend on the exact nature of your problem, how severe it is, how long its been around, your occupation and recreational duties, etc. No two patients are alike.

The most common neck pain treatments are:

How long will I have to go to the chiropractor for neck pain?

Chiropractic neck pain treatment can last a few sessions to several months in the case of a car accident injury. Your doctor will go over a treatment plan ahead of time explaining the rationale for care and answer any questions. A reputable chiropractor will always give you choices in care from short pain relief care to longer term rehabilitation care. You should not be pressured into accepting a care plan that you are uncomfortable with.

Chiropractic Pain Relief Treatment
Orange, CA

Chiropractic is heralded by many to help with many different health issues, but pain relief may be the most important.

Pain is a problem that afflicts everyone at one point or another in our lives. And while you’d think there are many ways to relieve pain, you’d be surprised to learn that because pain is so misunderstood and such a difficult medical problem to solve,  many people suffer chronic disabling pain each and every day.

There are different types of pain and obviously multiple sources of pain. Entire books are written on pain; pain management is an entire medical specialty. So if there is such a focus on pain, why do people continue to suffer?

The problem with many pain treatments is that they are directed at the pain–and not the source or cause of the pain.

If all your pain treatment consists of is masking or covering up the symptoms of pain: medication, local lotions, shots, etc then the pain may very well continue because the pain source has not been dealt with. Successful pain relief treatment not only attempts to extinguish the pain sensation, it must also eradicate whatever is underlying causing the pain to begin with.

Chiropractic treatment is concerned with removing the cause of pain.

The entire philosophy and practice of chiropractic is premised on removing interference from your spine that may be causing pain or disease. When the cause is corrected, the pain and malfunction subsides.  This is what makes chiropractic pain relief treatment unique and why it is so effective.  Of course while the source of pain is being corrected, which can take some time to unravel, other treatments, adjunctive treatments, may also be used to help speed the recovery and relive you of your pain more quickly.  Therapy modalities such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation, cold laser, muscle work and exercises are helpful to combine with chiropractic spinal adjustments for pain relief.

The consequences of chronic pain?

The problem with pain over a long period of time (longer than 3 months) is that your brain and nervous system actually begin to rewire themselves. People who suffer pain after 3 months, are prone to more pain as the nervous system becomes more sensitive to pain. You muscles may also contract and contort to hold your joints in a less painful position that may lead to further malfunction and yes, more pain. Being in constant pain is also bad for you in otehr ways. It can cause depression and anxiety, can elevate your blood pressure, alter your blood sugar, cause loss of sleep, and more.  So, if you are experiencing pain, it is for the best that you do something about it, sooner rather than later.

If you’ve been suffering from pain because no other treatments have helped, call our office (714) 938-0575.

Often we can get down to the source of your pain and develop a personalized treatment plan to relieve your pain quickly and affordably. Some very painful and longstanding painful conditions can be relieved in a handful of visits, some take longer, but the only way to know if you can be helped is by showing up and getting checked.

To make it even easier to find pain relief, we are offering a special for new patients:

Upon graduating, Dr. Marks began practice in Lake Arrowhead, CA and then in Anaheim Hills, CA. A lifelong student, he also enrolled in Post-doctorate specialty training in Orthopedics, completing his specialty training on weekends over the next few years.

Finding a Chiropractor Nearby is Easy, Finding a Highly Qualified Chiropractor Who Will Take Care of Your Pain and Not Break Your Bank Can Be Difficult.

In the cities of Orange, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Placentia, Santa Ana, Tustin and neighboring areas there are plenty of chiropractors to choose from.

Should you choose a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) strictly based on location?

No. And here’s why. Sure the doctor is close to home or work and so will be an easy drive, but does the doctor provide the type of care you want or need? Are they accessible and affordable? What are their qualifications? How long have they been in practice and what special skills do they have?

If you have an injury such as a whiplash from a car accident or a concussion, you want a chiropractor who is well versed in this area.

Many DC’s provide treatment to accident victims, but don’t actually have any formal or specialized treatment in this area. They treat a car accident injury the same as a strain from gardening and that spells disaster for an accident victim. Many chiropractors treating car accident injuries merely crack your spine and maybe work your muscles with a vibrator or have you lie on a roller table. This is inadequate. You may have damaged nerves, discs, ligaments and joints; these injuries respond better to chiropractic treatments with physical therapy modalities such as heat, ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cold laser and others. This approach also “feels” better when you are in pain.

If you have enjoyed and benefited from chiropractic adjustments in the past and just need an occasional adjustment?

The doctor for you will be someone known as a “good adjuster.” And with changes in practice styles today, you will find there are more and more chiropractors doing instrument adjusting using varying tools instead of the doctor’s hands. So if you want a “hands on” chiropractor you need to ask and of course if you prefer an instrument adjustment (activator method) then you’ll need to ask about that.

What insurance plans does the doctor take? Do they accept MediCare patients and do they have a cash fee?

These are just as important as location. In the current state of affairs with health insurance many people with PPO insurance coverage have very large deductibles. A deductible is the amount in medical services you will have to pay out of pocket for before your insurance begins paying. For many that means, even though they are insured, they must pay for their care out of pocket. So when looking for a chiropractor near you, consider fees.

Find a Chiropractor Near Me is a common search for a chiropractor, but remember there are other features you may want to add into your search to make sure the chiropractor you pick is right for you.
