MYTH: “Modern Medicine is Based Purely on Science, While Chiropractic is an Unscientific Cult”

In the 1960’s the AMA systematically attempted to extinguish the Chiropractic profession for monetary gain. A key weapon in their arsenal was to brand chiropractic an “unscientific cult.” That message was spread through the media, taught in medical schools and ingrained into the public’s perception.

In the decades that have followed, the AMA was found to have conspired and violated the Sherman Anti-trust Act when they tried to muscle chiropractors out. Much research has been done to disprove chiropractic and many times the research designed to show chiropractic as a failure, has ended up substantiated the efficacy of chiropractic.

Chiropractic has been heavily studied and more and more research is now being done on chiropractic and other “complimentary alternative medicine” CAM procedures. While we strive to better understand how many natural methods work, it should be noted that the supposed purveyors of “scientifically sound” treatments should look more closely at themselves–as they appear to live in a glass house.

Most Medical Interventions in Use Today are Not Based on Science

“Yet only about 15% of medical interventions are supported by, solid scientific evidence”

British Medical Journal 1991 (Oct 5); 303: 798–799

“BMJ reports that 50% of the treatments used in general practice aren’t proved, and 5% are pretty harmful but still being used.”

Cope J. The great debate. Healthwriter 2007 (Apr): 1-3.

Dr. Lucian Leape, Harvard Medical School of Public Health researcher, reports only 13% of medical procedures have ever been tested for appropriateness by randomized trials. Further, he notes that adverse events occur in 3.7 percent of all hospitalizations. More frighteningly, 13.6 percent of those adverse events resulted in death.

Incidence of Adverse Events and Negligence in Hospitalized Patients Results of the Harvard Medical Practice Study I, New England Journal of Medicine 1991 (Feb 7); 324 (6): 370–376

Death by Medicine

In an article titled “Death by Medicine” was published it rocked the medical profession. When researchers began tabulating the numbers of medical mishaps and deaths caused by medicine and medical procedures, they were astounded by what they found. It was found that medical mistakes account for approximately 200,000 deaths yearly making it the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. More shocking is when researchers combined medical mistakes with deaths caused by seemingly the correct treatment for the correct disease, the numbers of deaths yearly total almost 800,000! That would make medical care the number 1 cause of death! The number of iatrogenic deaths (deaths caused by or related to medical treatment) is so shocking that many people simply will not believe it; cognitive dissonance.

Unfortunately it is true and the report is meticulously referenced. It is lengthy and filled with tables and charts and for some it may be hard to follow, but to read it go here: http://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2004/3/awsi_death/Page-01

TRUTH: Chiropractic is Based on Science and is Safe and Effective

Study after study has shown chiropractic to be an effective alternative to medicine, surgery and even physical therapy. Chiropractic works. Once more it is safer with much less risk than other medical treatments and is even less expensive. Keeping in mind the inherent risks of medical treatment, the numbers of iatrogenic deaths each year and the research showing chiropractic to be a safe and effective treatment, we can dispel the myths of the past.

Main Stream Chiropractors Are NOT Anti-Medicine

While it’s true some chiropractors are so fervent in their practice beliefs to assail anyone who mentions “medicine” to them, the fact is, most chiropractors work with other doctors and enjoy good referring relationships for the good of their patients.

Modern medicine has brought us many breakthroughs and we enjoy longer and longer lives.

The issue is, no one profession can claim to have the answer and cures to all diseases. Medical doctors who espouse skepticism about chiropractic, need more study to learn what their patients already know–Chiropractic works and it is safe.
