Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Was Found to Be No More Effective in Relieving Acute Low Back Pain than a Placebo
A recent study of 1,600 Australians with acute (sudden) lower back pain found that taking acetaminophen 3 times a day was no more effective than taking acetaminophen as needed and slightly less effective than a placebo pill.
Acetaminophen or commercially known as Tylenol, is regarded as the “first line” of treatment for lower back pain. In the past, acetaminophen was shown to be similarly effective at relieving pain as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID’s) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen sodium (Aleve) and others, but with less side effects.
This study brings into question the use of drugs for mechanical low back pain.
Pharmaceutical companies sell pain relieving drugs directly to patients through the media. Doctors are also urged by the drug companies to recommend the prescription dose of these very same medicines for among other conditions, low back pain.
Since no drug is without side-effects, and the drug companies themselves report over 20,000 deaths each year due to the use of acetaminophen alone, it makes you wonder why medical providers are not recommending treatments that are drugless and have been proven to be more effective at relieving pain.
A recent segment on Fox News with their resident “Medical A-team” physician Dr Manny Alvarez reported the Australian study, but when it came time to provide alternatives to acetaminophen therapy, Dr Alvarez dropped the ball. He told the host that people with low back pain should try exercise, physical therapy and acupuncture. Did you notice something missing from that list? I’ll give you a hint, it’s the second largest primary health care profession in the US. Volumes of research over the past 50 years have proven that is the most effective treatment specifically for lower back pain. It is a drugless medical treatment with very few side-effects and is more cost-effective than conventional medical treatment, including physical therapy. Have you guessed what “Dr Manny” failed to mention on national television? That’s right he failed to mention:
Chiropractic treatment is the most effective treatment for lower back pain
That’s sorta like failing to recommend water to put out a fire. Don’t get me wrong, I like Dr Alvarez. He often gives good medical advice and is very interesting to listen to, but on this one, he get’s an “F” grade. Maybe it was an oversight, or maybe it was political, in either case he failed to give the best alternative to drug therapy to treat lower back pain.
Don’t take my word for it, take a look at this infographic on Chiropractic for Lower Back Pain:
